The journey is harsh. How did we get here? How did things get this bad? Were we not just kids yesterday? Where did this come up from? Looking up, our eyes hurt from pebbles of memories raining, so we bow our heads with tears laced in our eyes. Our minds intern in negativity without payment. The feathered bed we thought would be a solution was but roses filled with thorns. Each day accommodates a Goliath defiling our God that we shrink from facing. Eventually, we flee the bed for the floor of distractions but our brutal reality slaps our being back into depression.
Like light rays from the headlight of a car beam through a thick fog, visions of hope peep just behind the stormy cloud ready to attack. Today is God's gift to us. He is the God of timeless eternity but He gives us one day at a time. He bestows the time we need to heal, to laugh, to ponder, to work, to rest, and to love. We won't fear the future, neither would we inhabit the past nor allow their lordship ever stand in our lives. Today is Abba's gift to us and we would rejoice and be glad. We strip tomorrow of the focus that shifts our gaze from His grace for today. Today is His gift to us and we embrace it fully. We are present today as He irons out details with us in His peace.
Daily we are presented with new mercies, as fresh as the timely movement of the sun from the East to the West. With hearts laced with joy, with lips clad with smiles, and with fists folded into a boulder, we show our boldness in facing that great Goliath in faith. Today is a present, with its letters representing the five stones David used to slay the giant. We do not know by which of the stones would the Giant fall. It may be the first or the last, we do not know, but we are sure to try. Knowing that the battle is not ours, but the Lord's. And we would be sure to render our benediction, standing right on top of the giant.
Today is a gift, that is why it is called present. It is like a parcel wrapped with many wrappers. Whatever each day presents, whether victory or defeat, we know that that's not the end. Each day represents a wrapper peeled off in our quest to discover what Abba has wrapped for us. Like the scripture says, "eyes have not seen, ears have not heard, neither has it even come to the thoughts of man, what the Lord has prepared for those who love Him."
If today is meant to bring healing from the past, we are present and submitted to the healing that is to be ours. Don’t live in yesterday’s trauma. Don’t yearn for yesterday’s blessing. Laugh for every reason you find today. Dance like a child. Loving more intensely. Forgiving quickly and unreservedly. Time will continue passing, but if we will take it one day at a time, His grace will meet us right where we are.
“Refuse to worry about tomorrow, but deal with each challenge that comes your way, one day at a time. Tomorrow will take care of itself.”
